WHITEHORSE—The Government of Yukon will provide $520,000 to Yukon school councils to provide school supplies to students for the 2016/17 school year, subject to legislative approval.
“We are pleased to respond to requests from school councils and the Association of Yukon School Councils, Boards and Committees to cover the costs of school supplies this year,” Minister of Education Doug Graham said. “This money will reduce the financial burden on Yukon families who face many costs at the start of a new school year.”
The funding being provided represents approximately $100 worth of school supplies per student. This funding will be provided to school councils through transfer payment agreements, and the specific amounts will be based on their schools’ projected enrolment for the 2016/17 school year.
The Department of Education is compiling a list of essential supplies by grade groupings – primary, intermediate and secondary. This list is based on existing school supply lists in Yukon and will identify essential school supplies that must be provided to each student.
Once the essential supplies are purchased and provided to students, school councils will work with their schools to determine how they can best use any remaining money to support their students, based on the unique needs of their school community. For example, they may choose to use remaining money to cover a portion of school fees or costs associated with extra-curricular activities such as sports teams or school clubs.
Funding details are being finalized and will be made available on the Plan for School page on the Department of Education’s website.
