Joint news release
WHITEHORSE—The Ta’an Kwäch’än Council, Da Daghay Development Corporation and Government of Yukon in partnership with the Government of Canada have unveiled the designs for River Bend, a 42-unit affordable housing development in the Whistle Bend area of Whitehorse.
“This is a proud moment for all Ta’an Kwäch’än citizens,” Ta’an Kwäch’än Council Chief Kristina Kane said. “This evening we share the design of our new affordable housing project. This is a significant project which will create new jobs and provide clean, new, affordable housing for Ta’an Kwäch’än citizens.”
The design contract for the River Bend development was awarded to Kobayashi + Zedda Architects Ltd. in February. Since then, the team has developed a site and building plan.
River Bend will maintain a community feel that fits in with the surrounding areas as well as providing affordable housing options for Ta’an Kwäch’än citizens and Yukon Housing Corporation clients.
The development will consist of three low-maintenance, SuperGreen and high efficiency buildings, surrounded by naturally-occurring forest and an abundance of green space. Each building will contain 14 units ranging in size from one to three bedrooms.
“Congratulations to everyone involved in this new housing development and to the community for supporting career and training opportunities,” the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation said.
“The Yukon government is a proud partner in this affordable housing project,” Premier Darrell Pasloski said. “I congratulate the Da Daghay Corporation’s board of directors for having the vision to focus on creating new jobs that will support new career opportunities for Ta’an Kwäch’än citizens while creating more affordable housing for Yukoners and stimulating the local economy.”
The partnership will provide opportunities to Ta’an Kwäch’än citizens and Yukoners through employment and business by way of capacity development and skill transfer. An emphasis will be placed on Ta’an Kwäch’än youth mentorship.
