A statement from Premier Darrell Pasloski on the 2016 federal budget

WHITEHORSE—Premier Darrell Pasloski today issued the following statement in response to the Government of Canada’s 2016 budget:

Yukoners, like all Canadians, had been waiting with much anticipation to see how the new federal government planned to prioritize spending for the country.

I am pleased to see that the Government of Canada responded positively to my letter emphasizing the importance of the Mineral Exploration Tax Credit and have continued it for another year. This tax credit is important to our mineral industry and provides an incentive for junior mining companies to invest in high-value projects, like those found throughout Yukon.

However, the Yukon government had not received many advance details of changes being implemented and we have been waiting for the federal budget to finalize our budget planning.

The devil is in the details when assessing a budget. There have been structural changes to both the tax regime and the budget and we are now working to assess the consequences that these changes will have for both the Yukon government and Yukoners.

My full comment on the federal budget will be delivered when I table our budget and deliver the budget address.
