WHITEHORSE—Amendments to the Municipal Act were granted assent today after they were passed last week in the Yukon Legislative Assembly. These changes give municipalities updated legislation and mark the completion of an extensive review process launched during the Our Towns, Our Future initiative.
“The amendments to the act support healthy, sustainable Yukon communities and provide a stronger foundation for local governance,” Minister of Community Services Currie Dixon said. “They simplify and clarify the Municipal Act, ensuring consistency within the act and with other legislation.”
The passage of these amendments is the outcome of three years of extensive consultation with various stakeholders.
“During the Our Towns, Our Future initiative, this government committed to conduct a thorough review and provide – as part of our mandate – an updated Municipal Act,” Dixon added. “I would like to thank the Association of Yukon Communities, municipalities, Local Advisory Councils, First Nations, and all Yukoners who took part in the review process for participating and sharing their thoughts.”
