Yukon Development Corporation presents technical papers for Next Generation Hydro project

WHITEHORSE—The Yukon Development Corporation will release the next set of technical papers for the Next Generation Hydro project at a two-day workshop and public speaking event planned for November 26 and 27.

“We are pleased with the progress made by the Yukon Development Corporation to explore potential Next Generation Hydro projects across Yukon,” Minister responsible for the Yukon Development Corporation Brad Cathers said. “Together we are planning to ensure a reliable, affordable, renewable supply of electricity for Yukon’s future.”

Since the last workshop in February, the technical team has continued to screen potential projects by exploring their projected costs and socio-economic and environmental effects. The potential for a transmission connection to other jurisdictions was also reviewed. This work will help the Yukon Development Corporation board and Yukon government determine appropriate next steps.

An additional technical paper, Putting Next Generation Hydro in Context: Other Solutions to Meet Yukon’s Long Term Energy Future will also be released. This study provides a context for Next Generation Hydro by presenting the impacts of a variety of alternative supply options to meet our long-term energy needs.

“This paper is meant to support a fact-based discussion about our future electricity needs, and the tradeoffs and benefits of different energy solutions and scenarios,” Yukon Development Corporation Board chair Joanne Fairlie said. “We look forward to discussing it and the other technical papers at the workshop and speaking events.”
