French immersion Kindergarten class begins at Selkirk Elementary School

WHITEHORSE—Fourteen Kindergarten students began their French immersion education in a new class at Selkirk Elementary School this week.

“This new class will help these students begin their journey in French immersion education early in their school career,” Minister of Education Doug Graham said. “We want to build and enhance this program for the future and develop the program to meet the needs of Yukoners.”

In April the Department of Education announced that it would be adding a new class at Selkirk Elementary School to help reduce the waitlist for enrolment in the French immersion program at École Whitehorse Elementary. Selkirk Elementary School was selected for the new class because the school currently offers intensive French programming, which can support the new Kindergarten class.

The Department of Education is currently in the process of developing a long-term plan for the delivery of French immersion education in Yukon and will be engaging with parents on the future of the program during the 2015/16 school year.

There is still room in the new class for four additional students. Parents interested in enrolling their children shoud contact the Department of Education.
