Funding programs provide housing options for early applicants

WHITEHORSE—Yukoners are making use of new Yukon Housing Corporation funding programs to address their housing needs.

“These new programs are already helping Yukon families acquire the rental housing they need,” Minister responsible for the Yukon Housing Corporation Stacey Hassard said. “There are still funds remaining and I encourage Yukoners to apply to these programs while the limited funding lasts.”

Since the programs were introduced in June, eleven Whitehorse families have been approved under the Rental Allowance Program which provides renters a direct subsidy so they can better afford monthly rental costs.

Additionally, six Whitehorse households and six Yukon community households have been approved for the expanded Rent Supplement Program. The program connects households eligible for social housing with rental units on the private market. The Yukon Housing Corporation then pays the median market rent directly to the landlord while the tenant pays 25 per cent of their gross income as rent.

Several applications have also been received for the Rental Quality Enhancement Program and the Municipal Matching Construction Program. The five new funding programs have been designed to address a number of housing needs in the territory.

“I want to stress that these funding programs are only available until the funding runs out,” Hassard added. “Now is the time for Yukoners who are looking to make improvements to their rental suites to act and I hope they are able to take advantage of these generous programs.”
