Hospice Yukon sets down permanent roots with Yukon government assistance

WHITEHORSE—Hospice Yukon Society will have a permanent home thanks to funding provided by the Government of Yukon. The announcement was made today by Premier Darrell Pasloski and Health and Social Services Minister Mike Nixon.

“We are pleased and proud to provide $220,000 to Hospice Yukon so it can purchase the building from which, for the past 17 years, it has provided much-needed services to Yukoners,” Pasloski said.

Hospice Yukon offers grief counselling, palliative support, professional support for caregivers and other programs and services. Its dedicated group of employees and volunteers work from a small house in downtown Whitehorse, which the owner now wishes to sell.

“Hospice Yukon’s long-time home offers a familiar, calming and welcoming atmosphere for people who are facing life’s most difficult experiences,” Nixon said. “The need for palliative and end-of-life care continues to grow in Yukon, and we are fortunate to have such a dedicated and caring group of people who are helping to meet this need.”

Lori Eastmure is the co-chair of Hospice Yukon Society. “Today, through the generous financial support of the Yukon government and in recognition of the important work of Hospice Yukon, we are realizing a long-sought-for dream to make Hospice House at 409 Jarvis Street our permanent home,” she said. “Our services are supported in a variety of ways – through financial and in-kind gifts from community and corporate sources, a wonderfully supportive landlord, and most especially, through the ongoing financial assistance we receive from Yukon government.”

Hospice Yukon works in cooperation with many partners, including the palliative care consultation team with Health and Social Services’ Continuing Care division, and maintains a strong link with the Canadian Hospice Palliate Care Association of Canada.
