WHITEHORSE—The Government of Yukon is seeking public feedback on its draft Local Food Strategy: Encouraging the Production and Consumption of Yukon-Grown Food.
“Our government is committed to encouraging the production and consumption of fresh, healthy, local food,” Minister Scott Kent said. “Creating a Yukon-specific Local Food Strategy will lead to greater production of local food and more resilient farms and farm-support businesses.”
The draft strategy’s objective is to encourage Yukoners to make healthy and local food choices and to increase the production and consumption of locally grown vegetables, meat and other food products.
The draft Local Food Strategy has been compiled over the past year with input from the Agriculture Industry Advisory Committee, local food producers and processors, and community groups.
The draft strategy addresses the following five aspects of Yukon’s local food system:
- Access and availability of local products
“We want to hear from Yukoners about making local food available in communities throughout our territory,” Kent added. “Agriculture branch staff will be seeking input later this summer in meetings and at farmers’ markets, so I encourage everyone to review our proposed strategy and provide their feedback and ideas.”
The draft Local Food Strategy is available online for comment until Monday, October 5, 2015. A paper copy can be provided on request.
