Professional Development Fund provides support to local organizations

WHITEHORSE—Minister of Health and Social Services Mike Nixon announced the three recipients of the latest Professional Development Fund awards today.

“We are pleased to provide funding to Teegatha’Oh Zheh, the Elizabeth Fry Society and the Second Opinion Society,” Nixon said. “The Professional Development Fund steps in when no other training funding is available. It fills a training gap for agencies that deliver health and social services to Yukoners.”

Teegatha’Oh Zheh will receive $5,000 to support the delivery of a three-day training workshop. The training will help frontline staff gain valuable insights into their clients and acquire skills to use when supporting their clients.

“The amount that we have received from the Professional Development Fund will make a big difference in helping us move forward in our knowledge,” Teegatha’Oh Zheh executive director Hailey Hechtman said. “We will now be able to host a training session that will assist our staff in gaining additional learning opportunities and practical skills that will in turn benefit the clients that we support.”

The Elizabeth Fry Society is receiving $2,602 to help one participant obtain family mediation certification. This certification will provide the applicant with training in conflict resolution, enabling the organization to offer mediation and conflict resolution services and workshops to other service providers.

The $9,675 being awarded to the Second Opinion Society will allow the organization to provide two days of training workshops and presentations on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Participants will learn about medical, non-medical and combined therapies as treatment with an end goal of positive effects for children, adolescents and vulnerable populations.

Since 1999, the Professional Development Fund has assisted those working in the health and social services fields advance their direct delivery skills so they can provide Yukoners with high quality services.
