Government supports 14 projects through the Arts Fund

WHITEHORSE—The Government of Yukon is awarding $140,750 to 14 groups undertaking arts projects in Yukon.

“The Yukon government is pleased to support a very diverse range of groups and activities with the Arts Fund,” Minister of Tourism and Culture Elaine Taylor said.

The recently formed Whitehorse Independent Theatre will receive $25,000 for a community theatre project titled My Brain is Plastic, which will raise awareness of addictions and self-harming behaviours among youth.

“Receiving support from the Arts Fund will allow Whitehorse Independent Theatre to go to Watson Lake and Whitehorse with a community engagement project,” artistic director Arlin McFarlane said. “This project has been over two years in the making and we are extremely grateful for this support.”

The Dawson City Music Festival Association received funds for its Yukon Girls Rock Camp. The camp, for girls aged eight to 15 years, will offer unique programming that combines music education and performance with empowerment and social justice workshops led by positive role models.

“With the support of Arts Fund, the Dawson City Music Festival will be able to offer hands-on music programming through Girls Rock Camp,” association executive director Emily Farrell said. “The Arts Fund will enable Girls Rock Camp to access necessary resources such as instruments and instructors, and will ensure that the camp is an accessible and well-rounded experience for girls in Dawson and rural Yukon.”

The Arts Fund fosters the creative development of the arts in Yukon by supporting collectives, organisations, industry associations and other eligible groups in activities related to the literary, visual or performing arts.

Arts Fund application deadlines are the 15th of March, June, September and December.
