Yukon businesses reap awards at 2015 Frozen Globe Awards gala in Iqaluit

WHITEHORSE—Five Yukon businesses were celebrated for their entrepreneurship, innovation and enterprise at Up Here magazine’s 2015 Frozen Globe Awards gala in Iqaluit, Nunavut on April 30.

“Congratulations to our Yukon businesses for their impressive showings at the Frozen Globe Awards,” Deputy Premier Elaine Taylor said. “Yukon has long fostered and celebrated ingenuity and the pioneer spirit, and these award winners exemplify those qualities.”

Taylor attended the gala and presented the award for Yukon Entrepreneur of the Year. This year’s recipient was Canadian River Expeditions, which also won the Northern Entrepreneur of the Year award.

“My business success didn’t come from market research or a gap analysis – I went through the very expensive ‘business school of hard knocks’,” Canadian River Expeditions owner Neil Hartling said. “I could have saved myself a lot of grief along the way if I had taken some business courses first. But I got lucky. My passion was driving me and it all came together after some rough years. It’s very rewarding to be recognized as a winner, and it makes me very proud of my team.”

The Yukon government is a major sponsor of the Frozen Globe Awards, along with the governments of N.W.T. and Nunavut. The Yukon Chamber of Commerce also helped coordinate Yukoners’ participation in the event.

“Small- and medium-sized enterprises are crucial to Yukon’s economic diversification,” Minister of Economic Development Stacey Hassard said. “The number of award recipients from Yukon is proof that our efforts to support this segment of the economy are paying off.”
