Government of Yukon files amended notice of appeal in the Peel land use planning case

WHITEHORSE—The Government of Yukon has filed an amended notice of appeal with respect to the Yukon Supreme Court’s decision in the Peel Watershed land use planning court case.

Following further analysis and discussion with its newly retained legal counsel, Torys LLP, the Yukon government has broadened the scope of its appeal so that all relevant facts can be considered by the court.

"The Yukon government’s goal remains the same. We are seeking clarity around the land use planning provisions in Chapter 11 of the Final Agreements and that the democratically elected government retains the authority to make final decisions on public lands," Premier Darrell Pasloski said. "We are still working towards that goal, but given the significance of these issues the government feels it is in the public interest to gain the higher court’s review of all elements of the decision."

The appeal hearing will be held in Whitehorse on August 21 and 22.
