New French immersion Kindergarten class added at Selkirk Elementary School

WHITEHORSE—A French immersion Kindergarten class has been added at Selkirk Elementary School to help reduce the current waiting list for enrollment in the program at École Whitehorse Elementary.

“The Yukon government is committed to providing French immersion options for families and we are pleased to be able to provide this opportunity in the upcoming school year,” Minister of Education Doug Graham said. “Clearly, families are very interested in the French immersion Kindergarten option for their children.”
The new class at Selkirk Elementary will accommodate 18 students beginning this fall. Selkirk Elementary was selected for the new class because the school currently offers intensive French programming, which can facilitate support for French programming in Kindergarten.

The Department of Education is contacting parents and guardians of students enrolled in the French immersion Kindergarten at École Whitehorse Elementary and those on the waiting list to determine their interest in the program at Selkirk Elementary. The process for selecting students for the new class at Selkirk Elementary will be based on the following criteria:

  • Kindergarten students already enrolled at École Whitehorse Elementary who were selected through the lottery and who would like to attend Selkirk Elementary.
  • Students on the current waiting list with a sibling attending Selkirk Elementary.
  • Students in the order that they applied to the waiting list.

The Department of Education will consider further expanding the French immersion Kindergarten program if enrollment numbers warrant.
