Yukon Recycling Club promotes waste diversion among youth

WHITEHORSE—Minister of Community Services Currie Dixon presented the 2014/15 Yukon Recycling Club grand prizes to the winners in their classrooms last week.

“The Recycling Club is an important program that shows young Yukoners that recycling is rewarding,” Dixon said. “Waste diversion starts at home and this initiative helps promote awareness and participation in waste diversion practices, like recycling, from a young age.”

The Yukon Recycling Club is a program for youth aged four to 16. Participants receive points, along with the refunds, for each beverage container they bring to local processors and community depots. These points are then redeemed for prizes contributed to the club by local businesses. The top point earners from each age category are entered in a grand prize draw at the end of each club year.

This year’s grand prize winners range in age from nine to 16 and come from Whitehorse and Dawson City. This year’s prizes include laptops and tablets, custom bikes and model rockets.

“We thank all of our suppliers for the great prizes that acknowledge the club’s efforts,” Dixon added. “We hear about the value of this program again and again – from the suppliers, processors and depots, and from the kids themselves.”

This is the Yukon Recycling Club’s 20th year of operation. Each year more than 1,000 youth participate. The club costs about $100,000 annually to administer, with support coming from the Yukon government’s Recycling Fund.
