WHITEHORSE—Yukon Housing Corporation has provided $235,000 to the Carcross Tagish Management Corporation for the construction of two new housing projects.
“The Government of Yukon is pleased to assist the Carcross Tagish Management Corporation,” Premier Darrell Pasloski said. “The CTFN and the Yukon government have been able to accomplish a lot together recently. We look forward to building on this successful relationship for the benefit of the community and all Yukoners.”
While the final structural designs are not complete, lots next to Bennett Lake are being prepared for construction of the two affordable rental projects.
“Our focus for the past couple of years has been to develop more safe and affordable housing in the community, while at the same time training some of our young people for new opportunities in the construction trades.” Carcross Tagish Management Corporation CEO Justin Ferbey said.
“We will probably go out for a competitive bid process for these two buildings,” Ferbey added. “It appears all the carpentry people we have trained will already be busy on other projects in the community.”
Carcross has recently witnessed a surge of construction projects including a number of tiny houses and a new learning center, and more building projects are on the horizon.
“By creating new careers as well as new housing options, the CTMC is adding value for its citizens and the future of the community,” Minister responsible for the Yukon Housing Corporation Stacey Hassard said.
The funding comes from the Northern Housing Trust, and was approved following an RFQ/P bid process in November of 2014.
