WHITEHORSE—Whitehorse-area kindergarten registration begins at 9 a.m. on February 9 for children born on or before December 31, 2010.
“I look forward to welcoming our youngest new students,” Minister of Education Doug Graham said. “Kindergarten allows students to learn in a fun and supportive environment while learning about the routines and structure of a school classroom.”
The registration process begins on February 9 with the completion of the online form in which parents or guardians indicate the preferred school in their attendance area. In assigning students to classes, Yukon Education considers attendance area, siblings already at the school, and the order in which applications are received.
At École Whitehorse Elementary, where demand for French immersion kindergarten may exceed capacity, a new approach to class allocation is being tried with the support of Canadian Parents for French and the school council.
- In previous years, after the first spots were assigned to students with a sibling at the school, remaining positions were filled in the order in which applications were received. That created stress for parents who weren’t able to respond as soon as registration opened.
- To create a more equitable system, Yukon Education is testing a lottery approach. This year, after spots are assigned to students with a sibling at École Whitehorse Elementary, a random draw from applications received between February 9 and 13 will be used to fill the remaining spots and establish a wait list if needed. Applications received after February 13 will be added to the wait list in the order they are received.
“We want to make signing up your child for kindergarten as easy as possible. The online form has gone a long way to make the process convenient for parents,” Graham added.
Families interested in Catholic school will need to complete a Catholic Schools of Whitehorse Admission Package in addition to the Yukon Education online form. Families in Yukon communities or those interested in French kindergarten at École Émilie-Tremblay should visit or call the schools directly to register. Parents will receive reminders in the mail.
