Remaining Arctic Winter Games legacy fund distributed

WHITEHORSE—The final installment of the 2012 Arctic Winter Games legacy fund has been distributed to Yukon’s sport community. Final amounts awarded total more than $189,000.

“We were proud to host the games in 2012,” Minister of Community Services Brad Cathers said. “Good fiscal management of those games resulted in this legacy fund and we are happy to see it go towards the sport and recreation community in Yukon.”

Yukon successfully hosted the 2012 games resulting in a $500,000 Arctic Winter Games legacy fund.

To ensure the legacy fund was distributed in a way that represents the values of the games, the 2012 host society formed a legacy committee to review applications.

A portion of the funding was distributed to Yukon sport organizations in the fall of 2013 and this final distribution totals the amount remaining in the legacy fund.

“It’s great to see this money distributed within the sport and recreation community of Yukon,” president of the 2012 Host Society George Arcand said. “The territory’s sport organizations work hard to provide active and healthy opportunities for Yukoners. This funding helps them accomplish that.”

In this final distribution, 21 sport governing bodies received a range of funding, including: $17,000 for Cross Country Yukon; $15,000 for Biathlon Yukon, the Yukon Canoe Kayak Club and the Yukon Soccer Association; $14,500 for the Yukon Amateur Hockey Association; and $14,200 for Swim Yukon.
