Yukon Development Corporation awards technical studies work to Midgard Consulting Inc.

WHITEHORSE—The Yukon Development Corporation (YDC) has awarded a contract for the initial technical work in support of its Next Generation Hydro work plan.

On behalf of the Government of Yukon, YDC is undertaking an investigation of next generation hydro for Yukon. To accomplish this work, a contract has been awarded to the successful applicant in a competitive process, Midgard Consulting Inc.

Midgard Consulting Inc. will lead a team of specialists to address the Yukon government’s key criteria for hydroelectric power. The Midgard team will deliver a series of technical studies including:
    • economic growth scenarios
    • energy demand forecasts
    • environmental and socio-economic outcomes of hydro projects

“This is another important step in implementing the hydroelectric directive work plan,” Minister responsible for YDC Scott Kent said. “This work will ultimately help inform a recommendation about where to locate one or more of Yukon’s next generation hydro opportunities”.

Midgard is a BC-based consultancy offering engineering and project consulting services to the North American electric utility sector. They specialize in hydroelectric and transmission projects. Midgard will be contracting some of its services from locally based firms.

“We are pleased to have both the project engagement and technical scopes of work in place as set out in the work plan,” YDC board chair Joanne Fairlie said. “We look forward to sharing the results of this work with Yukoners over the coming months.”

The results of Midgard’s analysis will be summarized in two YDC documents: a Next Generation and Transmission Viability Options Study and a Next Generation Hydro Business Case. It is anticipated that this work will be completed by November 2015.
