WHITEHORSE—The Vuntut Gwitchin Government is now managing and operating the solid waste facility in Old Crow.
“This is a positive step for the First Nation, local residents and for solid waste management in the community,” Minister of Community Services Brad Cathers said. “We are very pleased to work together with the Vuntut Gwitchin Government and are confident that the facility will continue to meet the unique waste management needs of Old Crow.”
A formal agreement was recently signed between the two governments. Local operation of the facility has already begun. At this time, the Yukon government will continue to own the land and the equipment, and will support the Vuntut Gwitchin Government as it takes on this new role.
This change has created two new opportunities in the community. Site attendants have been hired and trained to manage the facility as well as to operate the gasifier.
“This is great news for the community,” said Chief Joe Linklater. “By having more local involvement with operation, maintenance and management of infrastructure like this, we are continuing to work towards building and maintaining a healthy community.”
Already, community members are making the facility their own. A local youth group has been invited to paint and cover the new Free Store with graffiti art.
The solid waste facility in Old Crow serves all local residents and provides all waste management services for the community.
