WHITEHORSE—Two rural communities will benefit from almost $1.5 million in Northern Housing Trust investment creating affordable rental accommodations.
In Carmacks, six two-bedroom units will be constructed, while Carcross will see the development of two one-bedroom units. In both communities, the successful proponents were the development corporations for the local First Nations.
“These investments in rural housing will help address the need for affordable rental units in the communities of Carmacks and Carcross,” minister responsible for the Yukon Housing Corporation Brad Cathers said.
While three Whitehorse projects completed the RFP process, the Yukon government has decided not to approve funding for these projects.
“We have listened to input from stakeholders who point to recent increases in land availability and housing supply in Whitehorse that have resulted from government and private sector actions,” Cathers said. “There are concerns that government subsidization of construction of new commercial rental units in Whitehorse could have unintended negative consequences. This includes putting at risk privately-funded housing projects currently underway, including at least one large project with competitive rental rates.”
The Government of Yukon is continuing to work with community stakeholders on developing a Housing Action Plan for Yukon, which is focusing on issues across the housing continuum including rental housing.
“The Yukon government remains committed to working on the issue of improving availability of affordable rental accommodation, and we are formally inviting both the Yukon Real Estate Association and the Yukon Residential Landlord Association to become more involved in developing the Housing Action Plan for Yukon,” Cathers added.
