Updated Environment Act will help protect human and environmental health

WHITEHORSE—An updated Environment Act comes into effect today, providing a modernized legal framework for the Government of Yukon to respond to environmental management.

“Environmental management practices have changed considerably in the 20 years since the act was first drafted,” Minister of Environment Currie Dixon said. “The newly updated Environment Act enables a modern and effective environmental protection regime for the territory.”

While the goals and values of the Environment Act remain unchanged, the amended act better enables:

    • reduced risk to human health and the environment;

    • advanced sustainable development; and

    • improved consistency with Yukon’s current legislative practices.

The Yukon Legislative Assembly approved Bill 73, the Environment Act on May 6.
