Innovative environment encourages technology solutions for health care challenges

WHITEHORSE—The Yukon government is funding an event that will unite technology creators, business developers and health professionals as they collaborate on innovative solutions to front-line health care challenges in Yukon.

YuKonstruct – a non-profit society that provides access to space, tools and expertise – received a total of $43,530 from the departments of Economic Development and Health and Social Services to coordinate and host Hacking Health North from May 9 to 11.

“Following the success of YuKonstruct’s makerspace event in January, we’re proud to support Hacking Health North, where the next generation of local inventors and entrepreneurs can collaborate with people from other disciplines,” Minister of Economic Development Currie Dixon said. “This creative, hands-on event will encourage meaningful partnerships and may help point the way to practical new solutions.”

Front-line clinicians will form teams with technology experts to brainstorm technological approaches to health care issues and pitch their prototype designs to a panel of judges.

“These events, which are taking place across Canada, gather people from different backgrounds and allow them to work together to develop new ways to deliver heath care,” Health and Social Services Minister Doug Graham said. “I look forward to hearing the teams’ pitches and reviewing their prototypes.”

This Whitehorse event is the first of its kind in northern Canada. YuKonstruct is investigating options to link remotely to participants in Yellowknife, Iqaluit, Edmonton, and Yukon communities.
