New fund celebrates Yukon’s cultural diversity

WHITEHORSE—A new fund will provide $50,000 annually to support events that celebrate Yukon’s multiculturalism, Minister of Tourism and Culture Mike Nixon announced today.

“Yukon’s cultural fabric is constantly changing, and we now have a growing number of citizens from countries around the globe,” Nixon said. “This fund provides opportunities for new Canadians to share their unique cultures with their friends, neighbours and communities.”

The New Canadians Event Fund expands on the department’s existing suite of funding programs. It will accommodate events where the focus is on cultural heritage and traditions rather than on the arts.

“Yukon government is pleased to support events that will deepen our understanding and appreciation of Yukon’s diverse cultures,” Nixon added.

The Department of Tourism and Culture’s Arts Section will administer the fund starting April 1. Applications will be accepted throughout the year with up to $5,000 available for each event. Organizations interested in applying are encouraged to contact the fund administrator.

The new fund is subject to legislative approval of the 2014/15 territorial budget.
