Canada Water Week launches March 17

WHITEHORSE—The Government of Yukon encourages all Yukoners to join in a national celebration of water during Canada Water Week, March 17 to 23. Events with the theme Watersheds 101 will take place across the country.

“Canada Water Week is an opportunity to reflect upon the importance of water to the health of Yukon’s environment, people and economy,” Minister of Environment Currie Dixon said. “Yukoners are invited to participate in fun and educational events happening in the Whitehorse area.”

The Yukon government is working with the City of Whitehorse, B.C. Water and Waste Association (Yukon Chapter), Family Literacy Centre, Yukon Film Society, and Yukon College to present the following Discover Your Watershed themed events.

  • Classroom presentations in Yukon communities
  • Book readings and live music at the Canada Games Centre (March 19)
  • Water plant tours at the Two Mile Hill booster station (March 18)
  • Art and film night at the Beringia Centre (March 21)
  • A wildlife viewing tour of McIntyre Marsh (March 22)
  • A lunch hour talk about water treatment and remediation at Yukon College (March 25)

Also on the lineup is the presentation of the Excellence in Water Stewardship Award to the Yukon winner on Friday, March 21.The award was established by the Council of the Federation to recognize outstanding achievement, innovative practise and leadership in water stewardship. The winner from each province and territory receives a $1,000 grant, a certificate signed by the premier and a trophy.

Canada Water Week is held annually in the third week of March to coincide with World Water Day on March 22.
