Department accepts recommendations from Auditor General

WHITEHORSE—Minister of Health and Social Services Doug Graham accepts Auditor General Michael Ferguson’s recommendations on the department’s Family and Children’s Services branch.

The auditor’s report concluded the department meets many requirements of the Child and Family Services Act; the report also identified some areas where the department will more adequately document and follow up.

“The Auditor General made five recommendations to address these areas and we accept the recommendations. It is always our goal to provide quality services and we are committed to continuous improvement of services,” Graham said. The minister noted that the findings clearly stated that the shortfalls were “...nothing that would  compromise the safety of the children in the department’s care.”

Graham is pleased with report comments that note First Nations governments described their working relationship with the department as positive.

“We have worked extremely hard to ensure that First Nations are partners in decision making processes and supporting children and families. It was gratifying to read that despite some ongoing challenges, for the most part, we are working collaboratively for vulnerable children, youth, and families,” Graham added.

The department will now work on a plan to implement the recommendations in the report.

“Audits by the Auditor General’s staff are important in ensuring government can continue to improve and enhance services to Yukoners. We look forward to demonstrating improvement based on their recommendations,” Graham said.
