New legislation passed to improve child support payment process

WHITEHORSE—The Government of Yukon passed the Child Support Administrative Recalculation Act yesterday with unanimous support by all legislative assembly members.

The new legislation will create a recalculation service for child support payments when the income of a parent changes. This recalculation service will save court costs and time when parents want to update child support payments.

“The new recalculation service will fit the unique needs of single parents in Yukon,” acting Minister of Justice Currie Dixon said. “It will also ensure that children receive the level of support they deserve.”

The new service will require parents to report their income and will use the same Child Support Guidelines used in the original child support order.

The government aims to launch the recalculation service when the act is proclaimed in June 2014. The regulations and procedural details will be published at the same time.
