Old Crow winter road gets green light

WHITEHORSE—The Government of Yukon announced today that through an agreement with the Vuntut Gwitchin Government, the Old Crow winter road will be constructed this year for the first time since 2004.

“This partnership project with the Vuntut Gwitchin Government allows us to work together on priorities that serve our community in North Yukon,” Premier Darrell Pasloski said.

The winter road is targeted to be ready for travel February 24 with the last day of travel slated for March 17.

“After the setbacks that we saw last winter due to weather, we are pleased to see this project come to fruition,” Chief Joe Linklater said. “We welcome the partnership with the Department of Highways and Public Works on this important community project. We’ve invested in community infrastructure, including a new store, a new tank farm, as well as a number of housing units all of which will be brought in on the winter road.”

The Department of Highways and Public Works and Vuntut Gwitchin Government cost-share agreement will see the department contribute up to $700,000 to the project. The Vuntut Gwitchin Government will manage and oversee the project.

“My department looks forward to working with the Vuntut Gwitchin Government on this important infrastructure work,” Minister of Highways and Public Works Wade Istchenko said.
