New Community Energy Plan supports sustainable future for Town of Faro

WHITEHORSE—The Town of Faro and the Government of Yukon have released a community energy plan outlining the town’s energy demands, uses and costs.

“Community energy plans assist in exploring energy-related opportunities and challenges,” Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources Scott Kent said. “This plan will help the residents of Faro manage their energy consumption and strengthen their community’s long-term energy resiliency and sustainability.”

The comprehensive plan determined that in 2012 the community as a whole spent $2.6 million to purchase energy, producing an estimated 4,506 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. With this clear picture of the community’s energy consumption, the report presents recommendations that could be implemented at the community level and in municipal operations.

“We are looking forward to working with the Town of Faro as it seeks to implement its energy priorities,” Minister of Community Services Brad Cathers said. “The Our Towns, Our Future process enabled this energy plan and we are pleased to continue the positive work achieved and proceed with this next step in the process.”

The Community Energy Plan was developed in partnership with Energy, Mines and Resource’s Energy Solutions Centre, Community Services’ Community Development division and the residents of the Town of Faro. The partners formed a joint Community Development Team to complete this work as was recommended by the 2011 Our Towns, Our Future Findings report.

“The thorough energy analysis allows the Town of Faro to determine how it can develop practical solutions to improve its energy consumption,” Mayor of the Town of Faro Heather Campbell said. “The Energy Plan empowers the residents of Faro to become energy champions in the territory by determining our own priorities and identifying potential action items in the interest of ensuring we can sustain our future energy needs.”

Although this is the first plan of its kind in Yukon, similar community energy plans are underway with the Kluane First Nation and the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation.
