Yukon government commits to new hydroelectric energy

WHITEHORSE—The Government of Yukon has formally directed the Yukon Development Corporation (YDC) to conduct the research and planning for hydroelectric energy generation in Yukon.

“A substantial increase in Yukon’s power supply will be necessary over time to foster responsible and sustainable economic development in the territory,” Minister responsible for Yukon Development Corporation Scott Kent said. “Hydroelectric power will meet this demand and ensure Yukon’s power supply is from a clean, affordable source.”

Under subsection 6(1) of the Yukon Development Corporation Act, YDC has been directed to plan one or more hydroelectric projects that will meet the expected growth in demand for electrical power. This includes conducting research to identify potential partnerships and options for the location and financing of new hydro development for government’s consideration.

“New hydro development can create positive opportunities such as the potential for partnership with Yukon First Nations in whose traditional territory any project may be located,” Kent added.

YDC will submit a written work plan to the Yukon government for this initiative including details on the financial resources necessary to implement this initiative.
