WHITEHORSE—The Government of Yukon is contributing $25,000 to emergency efforts in the Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful and dangerous storms in recorded history.
“As this typhoon continues to directly impact the lives of millions of people, our thoughts and prayers also go out to those many Filipino who call Yukon home,” Premier Darrell Pasloski said. “It is unimaginable to think how this disaster may be affecting their family members in the Philippines.”
Members of the Red Cross are in the Philippines and are coordinating their efforts with other aid organizations.
“This devastating natural disaster has killed over 1,700 people, with that number continuing to climb,” Pasloski added. “Over nine million people have been directly affected, with tens of thousands forced from their homes.”
Canadian Filipino Association of the Yukon president Mike Buensuceso said, “A temporary donation box has been set up at the Asian Central Store at 210-C Ogilvie Street in Whitehorse.”
Yukoners wishing to make a personal donation may contact the Canadian Red Cross toll-free at 1-800-418-1111 or donate online at www.redcross.ca.
