WHITEHORSE—Community Services Minister Elaine Taylor will chair the 2013 Meeting of Provincial and Territorial Ministers Responsible for Local Government this week. The meeting is being held July 9 to 11 at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre in Whitehorse.
“This week’s meeting will be pivotal in bringing each of our governments together to discuss topics of mutual importance to local government,” Taylor said.
An important discussion topic will be a new federal infrastructure plan expected to roll out in 2014, which will replace the Building Canada Fund (BCF). In Yukon, the BCF has resulted in more than $244 million in joint investments for a range of projects including major highway and bridge improvements, improvements to solid waste management, drinking water, and waste water systems in Yukon communities.
“We appreciate the several years of federal support and investment in infrastructure coast to coast to coast, and look forward to contributing to the design of a new federal infrastructure plan that best meets local needs and priorities through a strong base of flexible funds,” Taylor added.
The meetings of provincial and territorial ministers responsible for local government provides an opportunity for ministers and officials from all 13 Canadian jurisdictions to share information, hear from working groups and conduct business geared toward supporting the long-term viability of communities.
Media are invited to an event on Thursday, July 11 from 11:50 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre.
