Bridges Café now open in the Main Administration Building

WHITEHORSE— The Challenge-Disability Resource Group has opened the doors to its newest endeavour, Bridges Café at the Ledge, on the lower level of the Government of Yukon Main Administration Building on Second Avenue. The facility opened on Monday, April 15.

“I am pleased and excited to announce that Challenge has been awarded this contract,” Highways and Public Works Minister Wade Istchenko said. “This initiative will have benefits for both Challenge and its employees, as well as all those seeking another option for meals and snacks. This space, accessible and centrally-located, will enable government staff and the public to enjoy the facility.”

Challenge-Disability Resource Group is a non-profit organization that has been assisting people with disabilities in Yukon since 1976. Its mandate is to assist people with disabilities to become active in their community, by learning real job skills and entering the job market.

Challenge’s newest project will be two-fold in its focus as both a wellness and a social inclusion initiative. The café will take a healthy food approach to a varied menu and will provide an open door to community groups and members of the general public who are seeking an inclusive place to dine.

“This collaborative effort will make this initiative successful. It is also a work in progress—feedback and suggestions are welcome about our products and how we can keep improving our services to meet a variety of needs. Our employees are persons with disabilities who will benefit from this real world work experience,” Challenge-Disability Resource Group executive director Rick Goodfellow said. “We want to bring back vitality to the space and will be actively opening our doors to a variety of groups throughout town to enjoy our space.”

As part of the contract, Challenge will also be looking after the vending machines throughout the Main Administration Building. Soon staff and visitors will have the option of purchasing fresh fruit or sandwiches from the machines.
