WHITEHORSE—Yukon Housing Corporation, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada will host the 2013 Northern Housing Conference: Housing Outside the Box on March 26 and 27 in Whitehorse.
The conference is a two-day event that will provide decision makers, designers, developers, regulators, builders and housing proponents insights into innovative outside of the box solutions for meeting housing needs in Canada’s North.
“We are proud to host this housing conference,” Minister responsible for the Yukon Housing Corporation Scott Kent said. “Speakers from across North America, as well as from Whitehorse, will share their experience and knowledge as we all look for innovative solutions to northern housing challenges.”
Building more affordable housing, problem solving with innovative architecture, improving energy efficiency, addressing homelessness, and unique solutions will be presented by leaders in their respective areas. There will also be a tour of the Options for Independence project in Whitehorse as an example of an innovative housing project.
“This conference is also an opportunity for Yukon Housing to present its vision of supporting and encouraging the Yukon housing sector as set out in the new five-year strategic plan,” Yukon Housing Board chair Claire Derome said. “We are developing new loan programs and looking for ways to forge lasting partnerships with First Nations, non-governmental organizations and the private sector.”
