Premier addresses Yukon issues at finance ministers’ meeting

WHITEHORSE—Premier and Finance Minister Darrell Pasloski represented Yukon at a two-day meeting of federal, provincial and territorial finance ministers in Meech Lake, Quebec on December 16 and 17.

“Finance ministers had a productive meeting and addressed a number of issues common to Yukoners and all Canadians,” Pasloski said. “I was proud to share Yukon’s strong financial position with my colleagues and highlight the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

This includes the expected need for skilled labour, energy, housing and transportation infrastructure.

“Yukon led the nation in GDP growth in 2011, we have had nine years of population growth and we have still succeeded in maintaining consistently low unemployment numbers,” Pasloski added. “Yukon continues down the pathway to prosperity.”

Additional topics discussed at the meeting were the Canadian and international economic situations, labour markets, equalization arrangements, and Canada’s retirement income system including the Canada Pension Plan. Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney also delivered economic updates on the global and Canadian economies.
