Deputy premier to attend state memorial

WHITEHORSE—Deputy Premier Elaine Taylor will represent Yukon at the state memorial of former Alberta premier Peter Lougheed in Calgary tomorrow.

“On behalf of Yukoners and our government, I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late Mr. Lougheed, who devoted his life to public service,” Taylor said. “He and his legacy will long be remembered and appreciated by Albertans and by all Canadians.”

Lougheed served 14 years as premier from 1971 to 1985. He is well known for having been a strong advocate for provincial control of natural resources and was the creator of Alberta’s Heritage Savings Trust Fund. He is seen by many Canadians as having been a true statesman.
