Yukon signs sister province agreement with Shaanxi

WHITEHORSE—A sister province relationship is being formally established between Yukon and Shaanxi Province to enhance mutual understanding and friendship, and consolidate and develop cooperation between the two jurisdictions.

Premier Darrell Pasloski and Governor Zhao from Shaanxi Province of the People’s Republic of China signed the agreement on September 18 in the province’s capital, Xi’an.

“Formalizing our relationship with Shaanxi Province through this agreement will further Yukon’s Asian investment attraction work and support the diversification of Yukon’s economy in sectors such as mining, tourism, culture and knowledge-based industries,” Pasloski said. “This developing relationship could potentially include Yukon companies doing business with China as well as additional Chinese investment in Yukon.”

The signing of the agreement is well-timed, coinciding with Premier Pasloski’s travel to China with the premiers of the Council of the Federation.

“Yukon and the Province of Shaanxi share a strong interest in developing new economic opportunities,” Pasloski said. “We are confident the signing of this agreement will lead to more discussions about mutually beneficial partnerships.”

The agreement commits to exchanges and cooperation in the areas of economy, trade, science and technology, culture, education, tourism and mining.
