Providing clean water for Yukoners

WHITEHORSE—More than $32 million is identified in the Department of Community Services’ 2012-13 budget for planning and construction of key drinking water projects across the territory.

“The Yukon government is committed to ensuring that Yukoners have safe and sustainable drinking water,” Community Services Minister Elaine Taylor said. “In partnership with the federal government, we work with municipalities, First Nations and other community groups throughout the territory to ensure Yukoners have year-round access to clean drinking water.”

Since 2008, Yukon has identified 60 infrastructure projects under the Building Canada Fund (BCF) to help address core infrastructure priorities throughout Yukon communities.

Drinking water projects underway in 2012-13 through joint investment from Canada and Yukon under the BCF include upgrades to water treatment in Carcross, Mayo, Old Crow, Ross River, Teslin, Tagish and Haines Junction and water system upgrades in Faro, Watson Lake, Deep Creek, Rock Creek and Mendenhall.

March 19 to 25 is Canada Water Week and a number of activities have taken place in Yukon to celebrate this fundamental resource and highlight the importance of reducing our water footprint.
