Government seeks ideas on new affordable housing

WHITEHORSE—The Government of Yukon today announced it is seeking public input on potential approaches to encourage private sector development of affordable rental housing.

“The Yukon government is committed to working with the private sector to address the need for affordable housing in Whitehorse,” Premier Darrell Pasloski said. “This is an important first step towards making public land available to the private sector so that new affordable rental accommodation can be developed.”

The initiative seeks private sector expertise and creativity to help government design the best approach to move forward with timely private sector development of affordable housing.

In addition to seeking advice on the best development model, the request for Expression of Interest also seeks input on the private sector development of a specific land parcel appropriately zoned for affordable housing. Lot 262 is an undeveloped 4.2 hectare lot at the intersection of Range Road and Mountain View Road.

Alternate sites brought forward for consideration by private sector interests on private or Yukon land will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

“There is currently no affordable private sector rental housing being constructed in Whitehorse and our government intends to address that,” Pasloski said.

A package providing details on the Expression of Interest can be obtained at the Energy, Mines and Resources, website or the Land Management Branch office, 320-300 Main Street, Whitehorse. Responses are requested prior to December 7.
