Government supports community youth projects

WHITEHORSE—Yukon youth will benefit from a contribution of $54,500 towards 19 projects through the Youth Investment Fund this summer.

“Investing in our youth is important,” Premier and minister responsible for the Youth Directorate Dennis Fentie said. “The wide variety of projects funded will ensure that youth throughout Yukon have programs this summer.”

Supported projects include a First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun culture camp, a Girls Night Out project in Faro, a Literacy Tutoring/Wilderness Day Camp project in Dawson City, a Feet on the Street cycle program targeting every Yukon elementary student, and two equine therapeutic riding programs—one in Whitehorse and one in Watson Lake.

Sponsored by the departments of Executive Council Office, Education, Health and Social Services, Justice and Community Services, the Youth Investment Fund supports short term community-driven initiatives throughout Yukon, addressing the needs and interests of youth under 19 years of age. Community groups can apply for up to $5,000, twice per year. Since the inception of the fund in 1995, 547 projects have been supported. The next deadline for applications is October 3.

The Youth Directorate’s goals are to increase youth awareness and involvement in programs throughout Yukon, help youth contribute to their communities and to improve the health of Yukon youth. For more information about the Youth Directorate visit www.eco.gov.yk.ca.
