Northern premiers to meet in Yellowknife

WHITEHORSE—Territorial premiers will discuss common issues affecting their jurisdictions at their ninth annual Northern Premiers’ Forum in Yellowknife April 27 and 28.

Premier Dennis Fentie, Premier Floyd Roland and Premier Eva Aariak will meet to discuss and work collectively on circumpolar issues, healthy sustainable communities, health funding, infrastructure, energy and the environment.

“Working together on pan-territorial issues with our sister territories continues to be a Yukon priority,” Fentie said. “In order to build a healthy and sustainable North, it is important to find common approaches that influence federal social and fiscal policies. This forum offers an opportunity for northern premiers to do that.”

The forum agenda also includes discussions on housing and policing in the North.

While in Yellowknife, the premiers will also meet with the Canadian representatives of the Arctic Council Permanent Participants to discuss their shared interests, including next month’s Arctic Council meeting in Nuuk, Greenland and Canada’s chairing of the Arctic Council in 2013.
