Construction of Whistle Bend Subdivision to resume this spring

WHITEHORSE—A contract to install underground deep and shallow utilities for stages one and two of the Whistle Bend Subdivision has been awarded to Norcope Construction Group of Whitehorse.

“With real progress visible on the ground we are another step closer to advancing the Whistle Bend development in partnership with the City of Whitehorse,” Community Services Minister Archie Lang said. “Work on the ground continues to build momentum and it is great to see the subdivision take shape in anticipation of our planned lottery later in 2012.”

The tender period for the construction of the deep and shallow utilities, including sewer and water infrastructure, closed on March 1, 2011. The successful low bid is valued at $15,938,672.88.

The City of Whitehorse began planning the subdivision in 2006 and received approvals to start work in 2009. The development is being managed by Yukon government on behalf of the city under a land development protocol.

Whistle Bend stages one and two are designed to accommodate 194 single family lots, 48 townhouse lots, 34 duplex lots and 17 multiple family lots. The design also includes a school site, one community-use lot and three parks.

When completed the new subdivision will accommodate upwards of 8,000 residents in nearly 3,900 housing units. Land lotteries for the first lots are tentatively scheduled for the fall of 2012.
