Government supports community youth projects

WHITEHORSE – Yukon youth will benefit from a contribution of almost $48,000 towards 15 projects through the Youth Investment Fund this winter.

“Investing in our youth is important and all of these projects are well worth our support,” Premier and Minister responsible for the Youth Directorate Dennis Fentie said.

Supported projects include:

  • First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun youth conference;
  • Taking Pride In Our Youth project in Faro;
  • Female high performance hockey camp in Haines Junction;
  • Ski program in Old Crow; and
  • After- school sports program by the Skookum Jim Friendship Centre.

The Youth Investment Fund supports short term community-driven initiatives throughout Yukon, addressing the needs and interests of youth under 19 years of age, and is sponsored by the departments of Education, Health and Social Services, Justice and Community Services. Community groups can apply for up to $5,000 twice per year. Since the fund’s inception in 1995, 528 projects have been supported. The next deadline for applications is April 1, 2011.

The Youth Directorate’s goals are to increase youth awareness and involvement in programs throughout Yukon, help youth contribute to their communities and to improve the health of Yukon youth. For more information about the Youth Directorate visit www.eco.gov.yk.ca.
