Premier announces appointment of Tourism & Culture deputy minister

WHITEHORSE – Premier Dennis Fentie announced today that Joy Waters has been named as the deputy minister of Tourism and Culture, effective December 14.

“Ms Waters brings a significant amount of experience to this position,” Fentie said. “As a long-time public servant and Yukon resident, she has worked at developing strong relationships in both the private and public sectors. She is a welcome addition to the senior management ranks in the Yukon public service.”

Ms Waters succeeds Brian Alexander in the position. She began her career with the Yukon government in 1991 in the Department of Justice. Since 1998 she has been with the Department of Environment as assistant deputy minister in both resource management and corporate planning.

Waters has a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and a Masters degree in social work administration. During her tenure in Environment, she was involved in international environmental discussions and she played a key role in establishing the Yukon Wildlife Preserve after the Yukon government purchased the facility in 2004. The preserve has become a public showcase with diverse programming that attracts tourists as well as Yukoners.
