Congratulations to Yukon’s newest operating hard rock mine

WHITEHORSE – Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources Patrick Rouble congratulates Alexco Resource Corporation (Alexco) on the commencement of commercial operations and concentrate production at Yukon’s newest operating hard rock mine.

“The opening of the Bellekeno silver, lead and zinc mine is great news for Yukon’s economic future,” Rouble said. “Alexco is taking a very creative approach that brings new life to a historic mining district by addressing remediation of the old mine sites, while at the same time providing new jobs and economic development. It is a model of cooperation that is being looked at around the country.”

The Bellekeno mine, located near Keno City and within the Keno Hill silver district, is historically the second largest silver producer in Canada. Alexco Resource Corporation purchased the assets of the previous operator, United Keno Hill Mines Limited, in 2005 and has obtained the necessary licences to operate at the site.

Once at full production, the mine and mill operations are expected to employ approximately 120 people and invest more than $25 million annually for labour, materials and supplies in Yukon.
