Renewable energy and advances in sustainable mining to be highlighted at Energy and Mines Ministers’ Conference

WHITEHORSE – Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources Patrick Rouble will attend the 67th annual Energy and Mines Ministers’ Conference in Montreal September 16 and 17. Minister Rouble will participate in discussions to advance renewable energy and sustainable mining in Canada.

"With the release of the Energy Strategy for Yukon and the Climate Change Action Plan in 2009, we confirmed Yukon government’s commitment to support energy efficiency, renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gases," Rouble said. "Working collaboratively with other jurisdictions will help us to reach our goal of a 20 per cent increase in energy efficiency in Yukon by 2020."

Provincial and territorial ministers will also address issues and opportunities for success in the mining sector in Canada. These include advances in green mining, improvements to Canada’s regulatory processes and affirming the importance of sustaining a vibrant minerals and metals industry in Canada.

"We’ve had success in every aspect of Yukon’s growing mineral industry this year. A key foundation of that success is our modern regulatory and assessment regime that enables environmentally responsible industry growth while providing long-term benefits to Yukoners,” Rouble added.

While in Montreal the minister will also participate in the Canadian Ministerial Round Table meeting at the World Energy Congress. The round table will highlight governments’ efforts to address Canada’s energy challenges while ensuring the development of a sustainable energy sector.
