Electrical rebate extended

WHITEHORSE – Yukon residential customers will continue to save on monthly electrical bills with the extension of the Interim Electrical Rebate (IER).

Premier Dennis Fentie announced today an additional $1.5 million to fund the rebate starting October 1.

“The rebate extension is an interim measure until the Yukon Utilities Board has completed its review of electrical rates, costs and services,” Fentie said.

The rebate offers residential customers a maximum discount of $26.62 per month for the first 1,000 kilowatt hours and is automatically applied to residential electricity bills.

The review, currently being conducted by the independent Yukon Utilities Board, is expected to continue beyond September 30 when the current IER expires. The additional funding extends the rebate until the end of March 2011.

“The review will guide us in how we deal with electricity rates in the long term,” Fentie added.
