Yukon supports community FireSmart projects

WHITEHORSE – Yukon communities will receive $819,300 in FireSmart grants for 28 projects in 2010-11, Community Services Minister Archie Lang announced today.

“Our government continues to support FireSmart projects throughout the territory,” Lang said. ”The FireSmart program is successful thanks to the partnership between Yukon, municipal and First Nations governments, community associations and non-profit societies.”

Of the total $819,300 in approved project funding, seven municipal projects will share $207,400, ten First Nation governments will share $282,900, seven community associations will share $212,800 and four non-profit organizations will share $116,200.

FireSmart funding to community organizations and local governments allows work to be undertaken to help reduce the threat of wildfire in and around Yukon communities, while providing employment opportunities for Yukoners during the fall and winter.
