Consultation begins on Recommended Peel Land Use Plan

WHITEHORSE – The five parties tasked with completing the Peel Watershed planning process today announced the start of public consultation on the Recommended Peel Watershed Regional Land Use Plan.

“This consultation provides an important opportunity for the public to provide input on the Recommended Peel Watershed Regional Land Use Plan,” Energy, Mines and Resources Minister Patrick Rouble said. “The views of Yukoners and stakeholders will help guide the future use of the Peel region’s land and resources.”

The Government of Yukon is undertaking consultation in collaboration with the First Nation of Na-cho Nyäk Dun, the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in, the Vuntut Gwitchin Government and the Gwich’in Tribal Council. Public and stakeholder input will be accepted until October 1.

“We are pleased to continue to work collaboratively with the Government of Yukon as the parties to this important land use planning process to honour and acknowledge their commitments under the respective First Nation Final Agreements,” First Nation of Na-cho Nyäk Dun Chief Simon Mervyn said.

Interested members of the public can provide comments at public meetings held in affected communities and by telephone, fax, or online through an interactive web forum. All comments received during the consultation process will be posted on the forum at Check the website for public meeting dates and locations.

The objective of regional land use planning in Yukon is to provide guidance to First Nation and public governments for the integrated management of lands and resources in order to ensure sustainable development and sound environmental stewardship while minimizing land use conflicts.
