Work begins for new Dawson City hospital and the health services facility

DAWSON CITY – Health and Social Services Minister Glenn Hart, Yukon Hospital Corporation Board of Trustees chair Craig Tuton, and Klondike MLA Steve Nordick today turned a few shovels of dirt to mark the start of construction on the new hospital and health services facility in Dawson City.

Actual work will begin following the issuance of the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Act (YESAA) decision document.

“The YESAA board has recommended that the project proceed and have requested that several conditions be in place prior to work starting. We want to make sure the government has given the recommendations fair and full consideration as required under the YESAA legislation,” Hart said.

Based on the latest design and costing estimates for this facility, the Government of Yukon recently provided the Yukon Hospital Corporation (YHC) with final approval to proceed for financing.

“The construction of a new hospital in Dawson City will move health services closer to home, Nordick said. “The new facility and program will provide expanded and timely services to the people of my constituency and the North Yukon region.”

“When we spoke to the residents of Dawson City previously, we committed to meet with them once our approvals were in place. With the YESAA recommendations and recent government approvals we are pleased to be able to show the design of the new hospital and health services facility to Dawson residents,” Tuton said.

“We look forward to a close working relationship with the Yukon Hospital Corporation over the next few years as we transition our services to a hospital in Dawson,” Hart said.
